Does Sin Make You a Sinner?

The Bible says that ALL have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23) and that if anyone says he has no sin, then he is deceiving himself and we are calling God a liar (1John 1:8, 10).

BUT the GOOD NEWS is that Jesus died to cleanse you from sin!  It is a FREE gift and there is nothing you can do to earn it (Ephesians 2:8-9).  The only way you can be cleansed from your sin is through faith in Jesus.

So, are you a sinner?  If you have confessed Jesus as your Lord and Savior then you are NOT a sinner!  But Marianne, I confessed Jesus as my Lord and Savior, but I still sin, so doesn’t that make me a sinner?  NO!

If salvation is a FREE gift that you can’t earn by your own good works, then how can you lose your FREE gift by your bad works?  You can’t.

To illustrate, consider the following analogy that I heard from a pastor.  Diamonds are made from carbon (i.e. black & dirty), but once the carbon becomes a diamond, it will never become carbon again.  Even if you completely cover the diamond in carbon, it will not become carbon again.  Just wash it off and you’ll see its true nature – a diamond.  Likewise, when a born-again Christian sins, that does not make them a sinner.  We are new creations in Christ and we cannot become unborn.

So, what should we do when we sin?  Thank Jesus for dying on the cross and shedding His precious Blood to cleanse us from our sin.  Then wash with the Word and allow God to transform us by renewing our minds.

Romans 8:1 – There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.  (NKJV)

Proclaim God’s Word:  Thank You Jesus for dying for my sins!  Thank You for making me righteous by my faith in You.  Help me remember that it is not my SELF-effort that makes me holy and it is not my SELF that makes me unholy.  In the name of Jesus Christ I pray.  Amen!

QUESTION:  God does not call His children sinners, so what do you call yourself?  Use the comment form below to share your thoughts.

I love this Marianne. God made this very clear to me years ago with that scripture in James 5:16 where He says the fervent prayer of a righteous person has great power. For years I felt that didn’t apply to me – until He made it clear to me that I am the righteousness of God in Christ – so my prayers are powerful and I am righteous simply by depending on Christ’s sacrifice on my behalf. I LOVE your analogy about the diamond and coal – great word picture!

      Ann,

Absolutely. This is just another area the devil deceives Christians and keeps us from enjoying the freedom that Jesus died to give us. Yes, we can never be righteous by our works. If that was possible, there would have been no need for Jesus to leave His Heavenly home and come to earth to die on the cross!

You ARE the righteousness of Christ! What a wonderful revelation!

      Have a Victorious Day!
