How is Faith like Sunscreen?

31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know* the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

John 8 (NKJV)

*This type of knowing is not head knowledge.  It’s the type of knowing that is applied to your life and changes what you believe, say and do.

I’m sure you have heard of the benefits of sunscreen, but you’ve probably never considered how sunscreen is like faith.

First of all, sunscreen doesn’t give you any protection from the sun unless you apply it!  Carrying it around in your pocket isn’t going to protect you.  You must apply it to your exposed skin BEFORE you get out in the sun.  It’s not going to help you much if you wait until you are sunburned before you apply it.

Just as sunscreen shields us from the burning rays of the sun, our faith shields us from the fiery darts of the devil (Ephesians 6). When we lift up our shield of faith it will protect us, but if we leave it on the ground those fiery darts of the devil will hurt us and sometimes kill us.  Faith must be applied to give you any benefit and it works best when it is applied BEFORE you get “burned” and are in the midst of a battle – a cancer battle, a job loss battle, a divorce battle.

We apply our faith to our minds by reading the Word of God and we apply it to our lives by speaking the Word of God.  For example, I had a runny nose on Sunday – the kind that makes you miserable.  I applied my protection – my faith in the truth that Jesus has already paid for my healing.  I never confessed sickness.  Instead, I confessed the following:

  • By His stripes I am healed because Jesus already paid for my healing!
  • No sickness formed against me will prosper because I am the righteousness of Christ!
  • A curse without a cause cannot stay and this curse has no cause thanks to Jesus!
  • Jesus reversed the curse of sickness and disease by hanging on the cursed tree!

You can’t apply sunscreen once and be protected from the sun for the rest of your life.  This is because the sunscreen gets washed off or rubbed off or compromised by your daily activities.

Like sunscreen, we can’t apply our faith once and expect that we’ll never have to apply it again.  It’s not because our faith is lacking and it’s not because the Word of God is lacking.  Our minds get exposed to harmful “rays” of life, negative people brush up against us, and we wash ourselves in filthy water – TV, Internet, Social Media.  All of these things diminish the effectiveness of our faith and we need to reapply the Word of God in our minds and in our mouths to continue being protected by our shield of faith.

During this weekend’s “runny nose” episode, I spent all day reapplying the Word.  I read many devotionals, I prayed, I took communion, and I spoke the Word again and again.  My body had no choice except to line up with God’s TRUTH.  I went to bed that night and never had the runny nose again!

Let’s Pray:  Thank You Jesus for Your healing that You provided 2000 years ago.  Thank You for Your TRUTH that sets us free from any type of bondage – sickness, debt, strife, etc.  Give us a desire to apply Your truth daily so that when we are faced with a trial, we will apply our faith and we will see YOUR power working in us and through us.
