Who are the 3 most successful people you know? Why do you consider them successful? Was your name on your list of successful people? Why not?
It’s hard for me to consider myself a success when I look at myself through the eyes of the world. How much money do I make? What is my title? How many books have I sold? How many blog subscribers do I have? Money and numbers are the two biggest measurements of success in this world and Christians do it too. How many people have you lead to the Lord? How many chapters of the Bible do you read each day? How many members are in your church? How much money did you raise?
What is success according to the Bible? Success is not an accomplishment or anything gained through SELF-effort. Success is a PERSON – Jesus. Joseph was considered successful even though he was in prison because the Lord was with him (Genesis 39). You will see people with an appearance of success – power, money and fame, but if they don’t have a relationship with the Lord, it won’t last and/or they won’t enjoy it. If power, money and fame were the fruits of true success, we wouldn’t see suicide, addiction, divorce, etc. from those who are powerful, rich and famous.
What are the fruits of true success? The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Joseph had the fruit of the Spirit despite not having any power, money or fame. But, Joseph eventually had power, money and fame in addition to the fruit of the Spirit. I think this is what we all desire, but we focus too much attention on the outward “appearance” of success rather than the relationship with Jesus that will lead to true success from the inside out. The spiritual AND physical fruit will appear in our lives when we are connected to Jesus, the Victorious Vine.
John 15 – 5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. (NKJV)
Let’s Pray: Jesus, thank You for success in my life. Remind me to stay connected to You and help me bear an abundance of spiritual fruit so I will be able to enjoy and employ the physical fruit in my life. In Your Name I pray. Amen!
